Admissions criteria

Students who have received a Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree or equivalent in English Studies or Philology: English or Applied Linguistics or Philology where English was the first language may apply for admission.

Admission criterion:

Admission for studies shall be determined by the place on the ranking list created based on the sum obtained from the final grade on the diploma and grade point average.

  • The admission process for English Studies shall be conducted within the limits of admissions adopted by the Senate of the University. The candidate shall indicate the preferred major in the IRK system at the registration for a study programme. The preference indication shall not be equivalent to being admitted for a particular major. The approved admission limit for the study programme shall be divided into individual majors mentioned above. The number of places for a particular major shall be determined by the Faculty. The final allocation shall be made according to the ranking list of those admitted to the English Studies (i.e., those who have obtained the higher number of points shall have priority in the selection of major, and those who have received the lower number of points shall be assigned to the majors where places are available), subject to the fact that only candidates who have completed their 1st cycle studies in English Studies with translation with the second language: Arabic, Chinese, Korean, German or Japanese, or Philology: English or Applied Linguistics or Philology: Applied Languages where the first language was English and have a documented knowledge of the second language (Arabic, Chinese, Korean, German or Japanese) at a level corresponding at least to B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages may apply for the admission to a study programme with translation and interpreting.
  • It is also stipulated that admission to the major with teacher training programme may only be applied for by candidates who have completed the 1st cycle studies in English Studies of Philology: English. This is because full entitlement to practice as a teacher is granted to a graduate of a 2nd cycle studies programme who - has fulfilled the subject ranges in terms of teaching the subject in primary school instruction – at the University of Silesia during 1st cycle studies and secondary school – at the University of Silesia during 2nd cycle studies. Graduates of 1st cycle studies in programmes with a major other than teacher training programme shall be required to complete the differences in the curriculum during their 2nd cycle studies.
  • In the case of persons admitted for the 2nd cycle studies with a teacher training programme with a documented partial pedagogical preparation (in line with the ministerial guidelines for training in preparation for the teaching profession – cf. Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 25 July 2019, i.e., Journal of Laws of 2021, item 890), a verification of this preparation (the modules passed, learning outcomes, ECTS points and the number of hours completed) will be conducted to eliminate or complete the differences in curricula. These differences may be due to the different permissible order of delivery of the teaching-learning outcomes for a particular course of study in other higher education institutions. If a student has to participate in compensatory activities, the student shall be obliged to pay a fee which shall be determined based on separate provisions.
  • A given major shall be launched with the number of candidates required to form one class group.
