Admissions criteria

Criteria for candidates with "new" Polish maturity exam (issued after 2005)

Admission shall include the Matura certificate competition – the results of the subjects indicated below, which are taken as part of the Matura examination in the written part, shall be considered:

• The result of the basic level exam shall be multiplied by the conversion factor of 0.5 or the extended level by the conversion factor of 1 and then by the subject weight.
• If a candidate has taken a subject at the Matura exam at both levels, the result from the level which is more favourable to the candidate after applying the conversion factor and weighting shall be considered. The same subject may be included twice in the admission process, provided that the candidate has passed it at two different levels, i.e., basic and extended.
• The score of the bilingual exam from the modern foreign language shall be converted to the score at the extended level by multiplying it by 4/3; The maximum result from the extended level shall not exceed 100% (if higher, the final value shall be 100%).
• Admission for studies shall be determined by the place on the ranking list created based on the sum of points obtained.
• Recruitment is carried out for the faculty of German philology within the enrolment limit adopted by the The University Senate's admission limit. Candidates may indicate a maximum of two specialisations they are interested in in the IRK system at the enrolment stage, which he/she is interested in, in the IRK system at the stage of enrolment. • For majors in: German Studies: German Language – Elementary Level (A1-B2 and German Studies: Swedish —  knowledge of the German language shall not be required.

• A given major shall be launched with the number of candidates required to form one class group.

Foreign baccalaureate - Detailed rules for the grading of grades of candidates holding the foreign baccalaureate are set out in Appendix 10 to the resolution. 

Important!

Candidates holding a foreign baccalaureate (hereafter: secondary school certificate):

• who do not have a score in a foreign language on their secondary school certificate the knowledge of a foreign language will be verified by means of an examination. The examination in The written examination will correspond to the level of the secondary school leaving examination in a foreign language lnguage examination at an extended level. Examination results expressed as a percentage, on a scale from 30% to 100% will be converted into ranking points according to the same rules as for the candidates with the "New Baccalaureate candidates with the "new baccalaureate";
• who do not have a result from the subject "Polish language" on their maturity certificate - in the qualification procedure instead of a result from the Polish languagein the selection procedure, instead of the Polish language grade, the following will be taken into consideration a mark from the official language of the country in which the candidate has obtained a document authorising the to apply for admission. If the secondary school leaving certificate does not specify the level of the examination, it is If the examination level is not specified on the diploma, it is assumed to be the extended level.

Knowledge of the Polish language is required.

• If there is no "Polish language" on the matriculation certificate, candidates' competence to study in Polish will need to be verified.
• Candidates will be required to present a document recognised by the University of Silesia certifying knowledge of the Polish language, at least at B2 level.
• Confirmation by the admission committee of sufficient knowledge of Polish language at the level of at least B2 level is a condition for admittance to further selection procedure.

"Old" Polish maturity exam

In the case of the candidates who took the “old” Polish maturity exam, the results of particular subjects taken orally or in writing (specified in the relevant programme admission criteria for candidates who passed the “new” Polish maturity exam), placed on the certificate of secondary education and certificate issued by Regional Examinations Board, are taken into consideration.

The method of converting results of the Polish maturity exam is adjusted to the evaluation system for the candidates who took the “new” Polish maturity exam.

The maturity exam grades will be converted to percentage points as follows:

In the case when there are programme entrance exams, both the results of these exams and the results of maturity exams are taken into consideration.

International Baccalaureate

The admission rules applying to candidates with the new Matura certificate (“nowa matura”) also apply to candidates with the international Matura – the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, issued by the International Baccalaureate foundation headquartered in Geneva. The results from the IB diploma will be converted into the “nowa matura” scale in the following way

• Percentage in the written IB Matura exam at the basic level (SL) is converted to points as follows: 1% = 1 points.
• Percentage in the written IB Matura exam at the advanced level (HL) is converted to points as follows: 1% = 1.5 points.

In case the candidate does not submit the International Baccalaureate diploma, for the sake of qualification, the candidate is obliged to submit the certificate about the IB result issued by the appropriate institution and present the IB diploma immediately after its reception.

European Baccalaureate

The candidate who obtained the European Baccalaureate diploma, issued by European Schools in accordance to the Luxemburg Convention of 21 June 1994 about the European School status, are subject to the same admission rules as holders of “new” Polish maturity exam. The results on the diploma of European Baccalaureate are treated as results of the extended “new” Polish maturity exams and are calculated according to the following indicators:

 In case the candidate does not submit the European Baccalaureate diploma, for the sake of qualification, the candidate is obliged to submit the certificate about the EB result issued by the appropriate institution and present the EB diploma immediately after its reception.
